What to Pack for Daycare

The short answer

Pack changes of clothes, weather-appropriate outdoor gear, indoor shoes, and any feeding or sleep items your child needs, all labelled. Younger children need more spares and supplies. Skip anything precious, anything with small choking hazards, and most food unless the centre asks you to pack it.

Infants and toddlers

The youngest children need the most. Pack bottles and your feeding notes for infants, plenty of spare clothes for the inevitable spills and accidents, and diapers and wipes. A sleep sack or a small comfort item helps with naps.

  • Two or three full changes of clothes
  • Diapers and wipes, or pull-ups for toddlers
  • Bottles, formula or stored milk, and feeding notes for infants
  • A sleep sack or comfort item for naps
  • Weather-appropriate outdoor layers and boots

Preschool and school age

Older children need fewer spares but more independence-friendly gear: clothes they can manage themselves, indoor shoes, and outdoor wear they can put on with minimal help. A labelled water bottle is essential at every age.

  • One full change of clothes
  • Indoor shoes
  • Outdoor gear for the season, including splash pants and boots
  • A sun hat and sunscreen in summer, warm layers in winter
  • A labelled water bottle

Label everything, and what not to send

Label every item with your child's name. In a busy room, identical mittens and water bottles multiply, and labels are the difference between finding things and losing them.

Leave precious or irreplaceable items at home. Skip toys with small parts that are choking hazards for younger rooms, and do not send food unless the centre asks you to, since many centres provide meals and manage allergies carefully.

Questions parents ask

What should I pack for my baby's first day of daycare?

Bottles and feeding notes, formula or stored milk, two or three changes of clothes, diapers and wipes, a sleep sack or comfort item, and outdoor layers. Label everything.

Do I need to send food to daycare?

Usually not. Many centres provide meals and snacks and manage allergies carefully. Only pack food if your centre specifically asks you to, and follow their allergy rules.

Should I label my child's things?

Yes, every item. In a busy room, identical clothing and water bottles are everywhere, and labels are how things get back to your child.

What should I not send to daycare?

Precious or irreplaceable items, toys with small choking-hazard parts for younger rooms, and food unless the centre asks. Keep valuables at home.

Does my child need indoor and outdoor shoes?

Indoor shoes are useful at every age, and weather-appropriate outdoor footwear matters because children go outside daily. Boots and splash pants are worth having for wet and cold days.

Have a question we did not answer?

We would rather you ask than guess. Send us a note or book a tour and walk through during a regular day.
