The non-negotiables
Begin by confirming the centre is licensed under Ontario's Child Care and Early Years Act. A licence means set ratios, inspections, and accountability. Ask to see the licence and the most recent inspection summary; a good centre shares them without hesitation.
Then check ratios and staff qualifications. Ontario sets minimum ratios by age. Ask whether educators are Registered Early Childhood Educators and how long staff tend to stay, because consistency matters enormously to young children.
- Licensed under the CCEYA
- Meets or beats Ontario ratios for each age
- Educators are RECEs, and they stay
- Clear, shared health and safety policies
- Daily outdoor time, with a real outdoor space
What to watch on a tour
Tour during a regular day, not a quiet evening. Watch how educators speak to children, how they handle a meltdown, and whether the room feels calm and engaged or chaotic and bored. Children who are busy and content tell you more than any brochure.
Look at the outdoor space and ask how often it is used and in what weather. Look at the food. Ask how the centre handles transitions, illness, and the first hard week of drop-offs. The answers reveal how much thought goes into the parts that matter.
Waitlists and timing
Good centres in Kitchener have waitlists, especially for infant rooms. Join early, ideally as soon as you know your start date, and join more than one. There is usually no fee to be on a waitlist, and being on several costs you nothing.
Tell each centre your child's age and target start date so they can place you accurately. When a spot opens, the centres that know exactly what you need can move fastest.
